Swinburne University of Technology and Eastern Volunteers will today sign a collaborative agreement to create educational pathways for over 1500 volunteers within the community.
The agreement allows both volunteers and those working in not-for-profit organisations to have their experience recognised, develop new skills and gain access to further education.
“Many volunteers come to us to gain practical work experience,” said Eastern Volunteers Marketing Services Manager Alex Makin.
“This new agreement means volunteers can combine unpaid work experience with the possibility of gaining formal qualifications through Swinburne.”
“The ability to gain a formal qualification whilst volunteering could ultimately lead to paid employment or facilitate career change.”
The new scheme allows volunteers to undertake studies towards certificate, diploma and advanced diploma qualifications at Swinburne, with the opportunity to continue on to a bachelor degree through Swinburne’s guaranteed entry scheme.
“We are creating educational pathways, by recognising the importance of voluntary work, and translating that into recognition towards completing a formal qualification,” said Director, International and Business Development from Swinburne’s School of Business Ranjit Gajendra.
“By recognising previous skills obtained through volunteer work experience, and offering learning options including online study, the time and costs required to pursue a nationally recognised qualification can be reduced.”
The arrangement also includes the development of a state-wide education and training program for staff employed to supervise volunteers to up-skill and gain management and leadership qualifications.
“In addition, Swinburne School of Business staff and international students will have the opportunity to participate in a volunteer capacity with not-for-profit organisations in the eastern corridor – something that we believe is a first for an educational institution,” Gajendra said.

Eastern Volunteers is urging the community to support its fundraising campaign to assist in creating an accessible service for the community.
“We need community support to relocate to the ground floor of our building to deliver an accessible service to the community,” Manager of Marketing Services Alex Makin said. “Relocating downstairs will cost approximately $60,000 and we are appealing for donations to help us achieve this goal.”
Eastern Volunteers is currently located on the first floor of 1/36 New Street in Ringwood. The organisation has recently purchased this property to relocate downstairs. Eastern Volunteers interviews approximately 800 people per annum and places these volunteers into positions in over 350 community organisations. Eastern Volunteers also provides community assisted transport, with volunteers driving 284,000 kilometres and providing over 14,000 hours of their time
“Eastern Volunteers has had a transient history but we now have an opportunity to establish a permanent and accessible home”, Mr. Makin said. “This location will serve the community and ensure that we can further strengthen volunteering and deliver transport services to people who may otherwise have no alternative means of travel.
Eastern Volunteers launched its Building Fund Campaign on the 21st of July, highlighting how individuals and businesses can provide donations. All donors will be acknowledged unless they choose to remain anonymous.
“Donations of $500 and above will receive a jigsaw puzzle piece of the building demonstrating the commitment towards securing a piece of Eastern Volunteers’ future. All donations are tax deductible and can be made online or by contacting by our office,” Mr. Makin concluded.
Donations can be made at www.easternvolunteers.org.au/buildingfund or by contacting 9870 7822.

Eastern Volunteers is seeking community support to relocate downstairs to create an accessible service to the community.
“Purchasing our head office will create a permanent home for Eastern Volunteers, allowing us to continue serving the communities in Whitehorse, Maroondah and the Yarra Ranges,” Eastern Volunteers Manager of Marketing Services Alex Makin said. “We are seeking community support to assist us in being able to relocate downstairs so that we can provide an accessible and inclusive service to the community.”
The head office of Eastern Volunteers has been located at Maroondah Federation Estate, Ringwood Library, Miles Avenue, Warrandyte Road and Suda Avenue, prior to the relocation to New Street in 2006. Eastern Volunteers is currently located on the first floor of 1/36 New Street in Ringwood and seeks to relocate to the ground floor to improve accessibility to strengthen its volunteering and transport services.
Eastern Volunteers will be launching its Building Fund at 10.30 am on the 21st of July 2011 to seek community support for the relocation of its services. The Launch will be held at Eastern Volunteer’s current office at 1a/36 New Street in Ringwood.
“Relocating the ground floor will improve the community’s access to Eastern Volunteers. Unfortunately relocation is costly and we are seeking assistance to help cover these costs. All donations made are tax deductible so please join us at the launch of our Building Fund and show your support for Eastern Volunteers,” Mr. Makin concluded.
