Cummins believes a company is only as healthy as the communities where we do business. Corporate Responsibility is one of Cummins’ six core values: serving and improving the communities in which we live. Improving our communities implies a broader level of involvement, engaging in dialogue around problems, building coalitions around solutions and giving resources and skills to build the capability of our communities.

With the help of Eastern Volunteers and the Cummins Box Hill Community Involvement Committee, ten employees volunteered to assist Taralye with a mail out for one of their major annual fundraising events. The Cummins employees sorted, folded and enveloped a total of 3500 newsletters, providing a saving of around $2000 to Taralye. Staff at Taralye were wonderfully warm and welcoming and very accommodating. The extent of their generous hospitality was evident when the Cummins employees were given a private tour of the centre by the CEO and enjoyed home baked cupcakes for morning tea!

The Cummins Box Hill Community Involvement Team looks forward to a continued relationship with Taralye Learning Centre.

Pam Stockley is a Volunteer Driver for Eastern Volunteers

My name is Pam Stockley, I’m a volunteer driver, and like it so much I have been doing it for 18 years!

I drive frail aged and people with a disability 3-5 days per week – I have regular driving jobs taking my clients to their appointments each week, and other times I drive one offs as required.

It’s my way of contributing to the community and at the same time being of assistance to those who need it most. More people should do it!

I love meeting people and interacting with them – our aged clients have a lot to offer and sure have some stories to tell!!

Then come along to the Whitehorse Volunteer Expo to find out about the many fun and rewarding opportunities available to you.

The City of Whitehorse and Eastern Volunteers are hosting the Volunteer Expo to showcase the wide range of volunteering opportunities available in the community.  A huge variety of organisations that operate in the City of Whitehorse and beyond will be on display at the Volunteer Expo, which will be held at the Box Hill Town Hall on Wednesday 2^nd May.

Attendees will be able to talk to local not-for-profit organisations to find out more about the volunteer opportunities available – including protecting the environment, tutoring, delivering meals, emergency services, assisting people with disabilities, arts and recreation programs, relief services, animal support and much more.

Volunteering can be enormously rewarding.  Through their activities, volunteers have fun, meet new people, gain new skills, support a cause and put something back into the community.

Research has shown there has been a shift away from formal structured volunteering roles to less formal roles. This enables people working long hours and time poor families more flexibility when considering taking up a volunteer role. The changing face of volunteering is making it easier for everyone to get involved.

The Whitehorse Volunteer Expo will be held at the Box Hill Town Hall, 1022 Whitehorse Road  Box Hill 3128, on Wednesday 2 May from 1pm to 6pm.

“The Eastern Volunteers Fun Run is returning to Lillydale Lake on the 18 March,” Eastern Volunteers Manager of Marketing Services Alex Makin said. “The Fun Run caters to all age groups, as well as a family category to encourage all family members to enjoy some exercise and the surrounds of Lillydale Lake.”

The Eastern Volunteers Annual Fun Run is held each March at Lilydale Lake. The 2012 Fun Run includes a 3.8km and 7.6km run, as well as a 3.8km walk. The race includes specific categories for veterans and children providing an event for all age groups.

“This year we are also introducing teams to encourage local businesses to show their support for their community, Mr. Makin said. “Teams can raise funds by sponsoring their participation, encouraging colleagues, friends and family to support Eastern Volunteers and the community.”

“Register early and take advantage of our special offer of two adult tickets on Puffing Billy Railway’s Luncheon Special,” Mr Makin concluded.

We have now raised over $32,000 due to the generosity of the community and particularly our transport clients. We are still seeking assistance with fit-out and refurbishment costs, with all donations being tax deductible.

Our partnership with Swinburne University has led to the introduction of the Diploma of Management – Volunteer Management, a course specifically designed for Manager, Supervisors or Coordinators of Volunteers. The course will be commencing from the end of March and has been designed to recognise existing work experience and skills.
Our Annual Fun Run is returning for its 12th year and will be held on Sunday the 18th of March at Lillydale Lake. This year we have introduced a new team category, providing a perfect opportunity for businesses or community organisations to compete as a team. Participants will also be encouraged to raise funds as they take on Lillydale Lake in the 3.8km walk/run or 7.6km run.

We are also pleased to announce Simon McKeon, the former Australian of the Year as our Inaugural Patron. Simon spoke at our Business Booster Breakfast last year and has kindly accepted the role of patron to support our organisation.

This edition of Pitching In highlights welfare organisations within Maroondah. These agencies provide material aid and support services to some of our most vulnerable community members. Volunteering within these organisations is incredibly rewarding and enables you to make a difference to the lives of people in our community.

This year promises to provide exciting opportunities for Eastern Volunteers. We look forward to encouraging more volunteers and providing training programs to strengthen the community sector.
